I've been struggling with an opening for my story (Redux) for a long time. Chapter 1 is already up and it's not the most exciting of openings. But I feel like I need to start the main story here.
So I've been thinking and thinking and thinking. What would people think of a second minor character story that appeared at the start of each chapter. Just a few paragraphs following one character in the same world alongside what else is going on. Eventually they'll meet up but I'm just wondering what you guys would think of this if you read it in a story you'd picked up off a shelf?
Also would this work in first person considering the rest of the story is in third?

Sounds like a great idea to me. I don't think I've seen it before either.
I'd say definitely try it in 1st person. I like that kind of thing - little interludes - in a novel. And changing the tense or the perspective can be arty and clever if you're into it.

I also considered doing it in second person because the extra storyline is meant to be creepy and nothing says creepy quite like 2nd person. But I think that that might be a little too hard.

Second person is difficult. Try it if you think it's worth a go! I like the title by the way.

Thank you! That took a long while to decide on

There's a Stephen King novel, 'Dark Half', where a author's character comes alive. I think in between each chapter, there's an excerpt from the fictional author's novel. Maybe you could do this, Rachel? Have a short chapter before each main chapter. I think it was written in italics.

I'll have to take a look at that. Thanks. That sounds like an idea I'm thinking of trying and will definitely look into.
